Spawning mops

Spawning mops is a helpfull tool when you want to breed your killies. The idea is to add a good spawning medium to the tank that you can move out of the tank. Killies will eat both eggs and fry if they gets the chance to do so. By moving the eggs to other locations you will be able to control and follow the hatching more carefully. See more under starting with non annuals.

A good thing with the mops is that you can make them very easily yourself.

Buy a bundle of acrilic yarn. The darker colour you choose the easier you will find the eggs.

Boil the yarn to remove any extra duying chemicals and to make the acryl sink better in the tank.

Find a book or similar shaped object that is about the height of the water line in your tank.

Cut a piece - maybe 30 cm - and lay it over the short side of the book.

Then start winding arround the long side of the book until you have about 100 turns.

Then take the thread you laid across and make a tight knot.

Cut the opposite end of the mop so you get a lot of loose threads.

Congratulations - you have a perfect spawning mop.

Put it in yor tank and wait for eggs.
