If you have some space in your comunity tank or if you have an unused small tank - then you are actually ready for starting the killi hobby.

I will always recomend to make small species tanks or devide a bigger tank into smaller rooms in order to avoid hybrids between different species. Becides the hybrid problem you will also have troubles finding the correct female for the male if you want to remove a pair to another tank later on. The females are very hard to differ for example inside the Aphyosemion genus.

As killies are from locations all over the world, also the water conditions needed for each strain can be very specific. But many of the killies are doing fine in 20-22 degrees celcius, PH about 7 and DH from 8-10. But before choosing your first fish you should find some good species descriptions to check if your favourite strain has special needs.

There are many ways to be a killi hobbyists and no way is more correct than other. What matters is that we all give the fish the best conditions and keep the strains cleanest possible. This way everybody will have healthy and beautiful fish in the next generations also.

A good help is to join one of the official associations. Here you will find people with the most killi knowledge and also an easy way to find and trade your fish or eggs.
